On Saturday the 4th of August I went to the Basement, live music venue of Grimey's record store, to watch the new Brendan Benson concert film "Concert Los Angeles" which was being shown as part of Readymade's film company launch.
Readymade is a record label set up here in Nashville by Brendan Benson, which boasts a roster of Young Hines and The Howling Brothers, Cory Chisel and The Lost Brothers.
Young Hines played a DJ set for the event before making way for the film itself, which aired for around an hour. We were treated to free pizza all night until it was ate up.
"Concert Los Angeles" features many of Brendan's solo hits. While watching the film, it confirmed to me how good a live performer he is. I have seen him perform twice as part of The Raconteurs, where he always holds his own and look like he is enjoying himself and once recently in his solo form.
Watching the film had me saying what i often say about Brendan, his voice is one of the best around, it is so distinct and suits the power pop style he plays, perfectly.
I bought the film on a fancy USB stick and a poster of the event all for $8 which is an absolute barging.
The film is now available world wide on a donation basis, i really recommend it to anybody who likes good power pop music, the songs are catchy and great fun in this live format. To get the film head to http://readymadefilm.com/
The night ended with a live set from the band The Howling Brothers.
They played a good set of bluegrass songs and had me tapping away right until the end, where they finished with a cappella song, always a great way to end a live set.
All in all the night was a great event and everybody at Readymade should be proud of themselves.
